Soulcialite Product Review: Body Wrap Shapewear

Bodyshapers (no matter the brand) have become required wear for any woman concerned with making sure she looks absolutely flawless when she steps out in her finest.

Last night, I wore this bodyshaper (left) under my gown for the DC Mayoral Gala. And this particular product, FAILED terribly.

Now, luckily, the sins of this product were not visible to fellow celebrants. But it was evident to me every time I got up to dance.

But let’s back up. The product, which I purchased in a size Large (and if you know me, you should know I don’t need a large anything – except a handbag) was IMPOSSIBLE to get on. It’s neat in that the shoulder straps are removable, but that’s about it in the cool feature department.

I have to admit, I got it at a great price on {For other shopping on ideeli, join using this link: }

But I’ve gotten better wear and use from a product handed down to me from my Mother. More proof that they don’t make things like they used to.

I don’t think these products are made for people like me, with a few curves. The product was 1) difficult to put on 2) did not stay in place when I was wearing it and 3) was just as difficult to take off  as it was to put on.

So, in summary  Body Wrap Shapewear may have kept my stomach flat in my gown, but was much too uncomfortable !

Ladies, what products work well for you? Do you like Spanx, or do you rely on another brand?  Share your details and any funny stories.

HIAH Partners with LilSoSo & Smirnoff: Event Recap

23 Nov

I’ve said before that I’m very blessed to be in the company of some great event producers, such as LilSoSo Productions out of the Metropolitan area.  I’ve praised Kat and her team for concepts that far exceed the regular party scene. If you haven’t been to a LilSoSo event, well, it’s not because I haven’t told you. #DoBetter

So, this past Wednesday, Hell In A Handbag partnered with LilSoSo Productions in it’s Party Rockers, Master of the Mix campaign for Smirnoff. In a new reality show concept, 7 DJs began a quest to be named Master of the Mix. Hosted by Just Blaze and Kid Capri, watch world-renown DJs compete weekly in innovative challenges that test their skill and diversity of sound.

I had a chance for more on-air camera time as a community partner, talking about HIAH as a lifestyle and entertainment blog for metropolitan Soulcialites. I also had a chance to partner with {Danielle is a blog inspiration} and Jessica Solomon of Here’s a picture of all three of us.

MOTMDC Nov 17th Community Partners

This event was rhythmic. We danced to a mix of soul infused, Afro Brazilian, salsa beats over hip hop and MJ tracks. It’s difficult to comprehend, and harder to explain, but I want to thank DJ Asho and DJ Meistro for their mixes. On tap again was The Vibe Conductor DJ Stylus. Together the three DJs seamlessly mixed their styles and kept the crowd energized.

Also on the mic was the combo of Nea Posey {singer/host extraordinare} and the UK Sensation. Nea and I have shared a few laughs over the last year. She’s a GEM.

The music faded to the back as the crowd watched the third episode of the series. Again, the tasks were challenging and unique, but this episode lacked some drama – no one was sent home.

For more event coverage, check CandaceNicole In the City’s blog here. I’m sure LilSoSo and Eddie B {of} will have video up shortly.

The next installment of Master of the Mix is tonight at Tabaq on U Street. RSVP at

Cole Stevens Salon Shines with Korto Momolu at NY Fashion Week

Local DC Area Salon Helps Fashion Designer Present at NY Fashion Week

Soulcialites have certain standards. And one, especially for Black women, is hair care. So, truthfully, it was no surprised when I learned that Cole Stevens Salon and Day Spa was a part of the team to make Korto Momolu‘s S/S 2011 Fashion week show go off smoothly, and expertly coiffed.

Korto has been extremely industrious over the past few months, which is her nature. She’s prepared a stationary and gift line “Korto Momolu for SanLori” in addition to a fine jewelry collection, meant to accent everyday wear for the fashion forward sophisticate.

Korto’s fashions are fluid and angular. Cole Stevens compliments with smooth, sleek updos. The stylists at the salon are well trained. Although, I have seen a change in the salon since a satellite location was opened on Capitol Hill. The Greenbelt salon is busier, with a second room open for stylists. LOTS OF THEM. Sometimes I feel like it’s a madhouse. I remember the peace and tranquility before the renovations. But, when you’re doing good work,  people want to get in on the good thing. I enjoy people watching. And Cole Stevens, with it’s affluent clientele, make for great people watching.

Cole Stevens is big on hair care and big on what you want. I used to get my hair done here religiously. Now, it’s an occasional treat.  I’m working out a few things on my own hair journey.  Right now, I’m considering getting the Keratin treatment they offer. They are also big on charity. I worked with the Salon on it’s Cinderella Foundation Fashion Show last year. It was an exquisite affair held at the Mandarin Oriental last Novemeber. Korto Momolu showed fashions at that show as well, which helped to establish the relationship.

Here are some of my favorite looks from Korto’s show in New York. Check the HAIR! {courtesy of Champion Eye Media}

Time to Pop Champagne for DC Fab!

Update: The event coverage, with pics, are in another post: The Fab Empire Shows DC How to Celebrate

There are quite a few blogs that cover DC Nightlife, but none quite like DC Fab!, which will celebrate three years this week. Soulcialites and DC Tastemakers will be in attendance at this invite only event. {To maintain exclusivity, I have deleted all references to the location of the Cocktail Party below.}

One of the other things that I’m looking forward to is the Congressional Black Caucus event guide that DC Fab produces. You can’t beat that. CBC Week has been losing steam, in my opinion, over the last few years, so, an insider list will be helpful for the masses.

Below is the press release info I received on this celebratory event. Many Kudos to the staff and writers over at DC Fab!
