Diamonds Aren’t this Girl’s Best Friend

Formspring.me question: who is one person that you would wipe off the face of the earth to make this planet a better place?

Okay, so the problem with this is that I’d be wiping someone off the face of the planet, probably because they’ve done some horrendous deed. But, who deserves this wrath? And what would be the point, because they’ve already done the deed. Too late, right?

I could suggest companies and organizations like: AIG, Blackwater, Diebold, Dow, Enron, BP, Exxon, Fox/Newscorp, Haliburton, or Monsanto. Their leaders would be ripe for the picking, right?

But here’s my best suggestion: Naomi Campbell.

Yes, Naomi Campbell.

Why not?

She has one of the worst attitudes in pop culture, and her behavior should be abhorred by all. Who gets away with cursing and throwing objects at people. Anger management is a bi-atch! But you gotta keep it under control.

Campbell may be hung at The Hague when she testifies at the U.N.-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone. The tribunal is investigating the war crimes of Charles Taylor, former President of Liberia, accusing him of crimes against humanity and other serious offenses across the border in Sierra Leone during its civil war.

It is alleged that in 1997, Campbell was gifted a diamond from Taylor at a dinner party at Nelson Mandela’s house (wow, to be a fly on that wall.) Naomi has since denied all knowledge of the diamond and in true superdiva fashion, won’t discuss it. {The ill-gotten diamonds were often payment to rebels for guns used in the war and were used to finance these brutal atrocities.}

Does this warrant wiping her off the face of the planet – well, maybe not fully. But follow me now. The civil war in Sierra Leone lasted 11 years; tens of thousands of people were maimed or killed; countless children orphaned, or worse, turned into child soldiers; women were brutally raped and forced to bear the children of this violence.

So, do we not hold the beneficiaries of this wealth accountable? Are Naomi’s hands clean?

The Huffington Post writes: Those who commit the crimes certainly deserve that attention–but they aren’t alone. Also deserving of attention and pressure are those governments, commercial entities, and people who enable the commission of those crimes, whether through helping to fund, arm, or otherwise support the perpetrators. Pressure on these actors, on whom the perpetrators depend for critical resources, is an underused tool that could change the dynamics of these horrific human rights abuses.

When Naomi Campbell takes the stand later this month, let’s not lose sight of the real story: those who commit mass atrocities are sustained by the support of third parties, and these enablers, too, should be held to account.

All for a beautiful stone.
Not more beautiful than peace, or innocence.
What do we value?

    I mean… If we are going to be limited to the pop culture universe, I consulted a pack of ni**as earlier and I’m with them… we say Mel Gibson.

      Clearly, Mel Gibson deserves a special place in hell. {Maybe that’s too harsh} But he didn’t make the list because I thought it would be too predictable. Plus, I need him to make the sequel to “The Passion.” Other insult and blackberry hurlers honorable mentions includes Russell Crowe.

    I don’t know if I could give this honor to Miss Naomi. I mean, she’s a class-A bitch for sure but without her, we’d lose so many beautiful editorials. I’m half joking, by the way 🙂
